Since the start of the 2018/19 campaign Marcos Alonso has been very brilliant for Chelsea in the left back position and the Blues have now rewarded his performance with a new five year contract extension.
Alonso, who joined Chelsea from Italian club Fiorentina in the summer of 2016, has become a key player for the Blues since his debut for the club.
Right after signing the five year deal, the Spanish international said via Sky Sports: “I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world.
It’s been a very good two seasons and I am looking forward to more.”
The 27-year-old defender was first deployed as a left wing-back in his debut season under former manager Antonio Conte but then has been flourishing in the back four for new coach Maurizio Sarri playing as a left-back.
A month ago Sarri spoke of the Spaniard, saying: “Alonso I think at the moment in this position, left-back, he is maybe the best in Europe.
“Physical qualities at top level, I think. He’s doing very well in the offensive phase. I also think he can improve in the defensive phase. He could be the best left-back in the world.”
Marcos Alonso has been very productive for his English club since his debut 2016 for the Blues in a 4-2 win against Leicester City in the EFL Cup.
Chelsea club director Marina Granovskaia said: “We are delighted to be extending Marcos’ contract.
“In the past two seasons he has developed into an important player for the club, demonstrating his outstanding ability and a fantastic attitude that has helped him become a Premier League champion and Spain international.”
Following his outstanding performance at the Stamford Bridge, Alonso have earned three international cps with his country Spain this year.
Marcos Alonso has made a total of 92 appearances for Chelsea in which he found the back of the net 15 times.
