Luka Modric ends Ronaldo-Messi era wins FIFA Best Player

“Croatia Best Player” Luka Modric has been named as the World’s Best Male footballer at the Best FIFA Football Awards in London for his outstanding performances.

Modric emerged winner as he beats former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool rising star Mohamed Salah to the FIFA best player award.

The Croatian captain was deemed favourite to win the award having helped Real Madrid won their third consecutive Champions League in May and also being a key player for his country in the World Cup reaching the final.

Despite being beaten to the World Cup by France ending in a trail of 4-2defeat, the Real Madrid star performance in the 2018 World Cup was not to be questioned as he was honored with the Golden Ball.

The Croatian legend is the first of many to end the Ronaldo-Messi 10 years-era on the football award, with Kaka being the last to win the Ballon d’Or back in 2007.

As captain Luka Modric helped his national team reach the final scoring two goals and creating one.

Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic praised his national team captain saying: “Luka Modric is the captain of my team, he’s the best player in my team and in the world, and he deserves this award.”

After receiving the award Luka Modric said: “This award is not just mine. It is my team-mates from Real Madrid and Croatia. Without my coaches, I would not have won this and without my family I would not be the player I am today,” said Modric.

“Without them, this would not be possible and thank you a lot to them.

“This trophy is also for my family, without whom I would not be the player and person that I am. They are my ‘the best’.

“At this particular moment, I would like to mention my footballing idol [Zvonimir Boban] and captain of Croatia generation 1998 and their first participation [at the World Cup finals as Croatia] and bronze in France.

“He was my big inspiration and that team gave us belief that we could achieve something great in Russia. Hopefully we can be the same for next generations.

“This award shows that we all can become the best with hard work, dedication and belief. All dreams can come true.”

In other awards sections France manager Didier Deschamps, whose team trampled on Croatia in a 4-2 win in the World Cup final, was given the award for the Best Men’s coach.
