In the wake of the opening of the January transfer window, newcomers in the Premier League Aston Villa, have secured the signing of Danny Drinkwater on loan from Chelsea for the rest of the season.
The English midfielder was confirmed to have travelled to Aston Villa Health training ground on Tuesday to undergo his medicals ahead of the move.
The Villans have been experiencing a midfield crisis following an injury handed to their pivotal star John McGinn, who has been ruled out for three months or less this season.
Drinkwater, who has been through a rough patch in his career, will be given fresh start at the Villa Park for the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign.
Speaking about their new signing, Villa manager Dean Smith said: “Danny was a key member of Leicester City’s title-winning team and has represented England, so he is a vastly experienced player.
“He will strengthen our squad significantly.”
The 29-year-old midfielder, who was an academy product of Manchester United, was famously known to be pivotal for the Leicester City team that won the Premier League back in 2016.
He spent one more season with the Foxes before joining up Chelsea for a fee reported to be £35 million. But due to various injuries the England midfielder succumbed to, he was only able to start 5 league games for the Blues in two years.
The former Leicester star was loaned to Burnley at the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign but was unable to fit into Sean Dyche’s team as he was only able to feature in two games in all competitions for the club. Although he was sidelined for several weeks after getting his ankle injured in September in a Manchester nightclub.
With all that in the past now, Danny Drinkwater will be looking to reignite his football career with Aston Villa, who wants to survive their first season in the Premier League.
